We know we should be cleansing our face and moisturizing each day, using a sunscreen when we’re outdoors, maybe incorporating a mask every so often, but did you know that serums will give us quicker results to the kind of skin we want? This is because serums target very specific skin care concerns doing more than our cleansers and moisturizers can. Why is that? Serums have higher concentrations of active ingredients. Where cleansers and moisturizers give our skin an overall benefit, serums offer laser-focused solutions.
Serums are oil or water-based light liquids with specific ingredients such as retinoids, vitamins, and AHAs (to name a few), and they are made in a way to be absorbed into your skin. There are oodles of different serums available for all kinds of skin care concerns: uneven skin tone, dark spots, dry patches, sagging, fine lines and wrinkles, you name it!
When using serums it’s important to read the label. Some serums are fine for everyday and some should only be used 1-3 times a week. Products with Retinol and acids like Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA) may make your skin more sensitive to the sun, so save those products for your evening routine. Use them once a week at first to make sure they don’t cause any irritation and then gradually work up to two or three times a week. ALWAYS use an SPF when using products with these ingredients.
If you prefer serums with more natural ingredients look for serums with Bakuchiol. Bakuchiol is a plant-based alternative to Retinol and a natural wrinkle-fighter! Bakuchiol doesn’t have photo sensitivity like Retinol so it can be used in your morning skin care routine. But still use an SPF for outdoors to protect your skin from aging and damage due to sun exposure.
Serums should always go on before your moisturizer. Give your skin a chance to absorb the serum before applying your moisturizer as moisturizers may “dilute” the effectiveness of the serum. TIP: If you’re concerned about a sensitivity to a serum such as one with retinol or AHA you could apply your moisturizer right after to help calm that.
What if you want to target several skin care concerns with a serum, can you use more than one? ABSOLUTELY! You can use several. If you notice your makeup is rolling or pilling when you apply it, you may need to spread out your serum use. A good solution is to use some in the morning and others in the evening. Always apply serums in an upward and outward motion beginning at chest and neck and working up and out to cheeks and forehead. No matter how many serums you use, the important thing to remember is to apply your products by consistency from thinnest to thickest.
If you’re looking for a way to amp up your skin care, serums are the perfect solution!
